MUNDELEIN, ILLINOIS – Our practice is made up of three pediatric dentists and two orthodontists, and all five of us hold the highest certification available in our field.
“Not every specialist has the distinction of being a Diplomate, the highest certification there is,” says Dr. Richard Port, Mundelein orthodontist, who is also board certified as a pediatric dentist. “We wanted our practice and our doctors to stand out among the best in our specialties.”The fact that all the specialists at the Mundelein orthodontics and pediatric dentistry practice are board certified is no coincidence, according to Dr. Cameron Wagner. He says, “We feel that being Diplomates of our respective boards’ means we can provide our patients with the best treatment possible.”The American Dental Association recognizes one official certifying board in each field, the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Board of Orthodontics, according to Dr. David Maddox, a pediatric dentist. Mundelein Dr. James Orbon says dental specialists who complete and pass the certification process for that board are considered Diplomates.
Dr. Orbon, a Mundelein kids’ dentist, says that he, Dr. Maddox and Dr. Wagner were three of only 74 pediatric dentists in Illinois that were Diplomates on the ABPD roster, as of May.
According to the ABPD website, certification is based on standards of excellence that lead to high-quality oral health care for infants, children, adolescents and patients with special health care needs.
“The goal of being board certified as a Diplomate is to let the public know that this doctor has the knowledge, skills and experience necessary to provide high caliber patient care,” says Dr. Wagner, Mundelein children’s dentist, who has successfully completed the accredited training and a voluntary examination process to become a Diplomate.
The certification for the American Board of Orthodontics is a similar, voluntary process and distinguishing honor when achieved, according to Dr. Gary Klein, an orthodontist at the practice that offers Invisalign. Mundelein patients can look for the Diplomate status of doctors to see if they have committed to the continued pursuit of proficiency and excellence, says the Mundelein braces provider.
