Braces for Children & Adolescents

Pediatric Dentistry Dr. Port and Dr. Klein know that the optimal time to begin treatment is during the early adolescent years. They do not routinely use a two phase orthodontic treatment approach. According to the latest research, about ten percent of young patients require a two phase approach. They will make every effort to treat your child in one comprehensive phase followed by a long thoughtful retention period.

Beginning treatment in the early adolescent years helps the doctors to guide the growth of teeth and bone during their optimal growth periods. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that the initial orthodontic evaluation should occur at the first sign of orthodontic problems or no later than age 7. Early evaluation allows the doctors to identify current and potential orthodontic problems that will lead to effective treatments.

Dr. Port and Dr. Klein will look for:
  • Periodontal (gum) problems related to crooked teeth
  • Jaw growth imbalances such as facial asymmetry
  • Bite problems such as overbite and underbite
  • Crowding and unerupting (impacted) teeth
  • Space loss that requires preserving space for unerupted teeth
  • Narrow arches that can result is a crossbite
  • Jaw joint and jaw dysfunction (TMD)
