Digital radiography (digital x-ray) is the newest technology used in dentistry to take dental x-rays. This technique takes a digital picture of teeth with their supporting bone structures and stores the images on a computer. You and the doctors will be able to instantly view your x-rays and enlarge the image to aid in the identification of dental problems inside the teeth and below the gums. Digital x-rays significantly reduces the amount of radiation as compared to traditional dental x-rays. DIAGNOdent® is a diagnostic tool that allows the doctors at Affiliated Dental Specialists a quicker and more accurate detection of cavities in teeth. This new hand held device allows the dentist to find cavities at their earliest stages for the most conservative treatment available. DIAGNOdent works by shining a laser light on the tooth. If there are caries (dental decay) present, the DIAGNOdent will create an auditory signal and a digital read out that describes the amount of caries present.
